What are hypnotherapy, EMDR & Reiki?

Known and used for centuries, hypnosis is a natural and normal state of altered consciousness easily experienced and associated with dreaming, pleasant feelings of calmness and relaxation which, whilst neither awake, asleep or unconscious has characteristics of all these states. The unconscious part of the mind is much more available for suggestion when deeply relaxed and it is this part of the mind that the therapist communicates with, implanting positive beneficial suggestions for the changes you want and need whilst you are very deeply relaxed.
Hypnotherapy is a skilled communication aimed at directing a person’s imagination in a way that helps elicit changes in some perceptions, sensations, feelings, thoughts and behaviours.
In a typical hypnotherapy session the hypnotherapist and client will discuss the intended alterations or therapeutic goals desired. The hypnotherapist will ask questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle to decide on the best approach for the individual.
Hypnotherapy may be found to be helpful for those seeking relief from a range of problems and is used alongside a person’s own willpower and motivation to seek a desired goal. It is often used to help relieve anxiety, aid sleeping, help to address bedwetting, address attitudes to weight, and help clients achieve behavioural change to stop smoking. It may also help with minor skin conditions that are exacerbated by stress and confidence issues, and may also be used to enhance performance in areas such as sport and public speaking. Hypnotherapy may help people to cope with and manage the relief of perceived pain.
Hypnotherapy has also been used with both adults and children to help manage the pain associated with irritable bowel. There is evidence to support its use in this condition for both adults and children and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Guidance (NICE) recommends the NHS should consider referring patients for hypnotherapy if their irritable bowel is persistent and has failed to respond to simple prescribed medicine.

EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitisation & Reprocessing) is a relatively new technique with its first clinical trials in 1989. It has been demonstrated to help processing and healing from traumatic memories and other distressing life experiences by recalling those events whilst being guided to make certain eye movements. The goal is to help process traumatic memory and relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR can also help with other mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, addictions, relationship problems, and more.

Reiki was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui from ancient practices as a simple, natural and safe method of self-improvement, working in conjunction with all other medical and complementary therapies. Usually administered by placing the hands on or slighlty above particular areas of the body and allowing Reiki enegry to flow, it seeks to boost the natural Reiki energy in a person for their highest good and wellbeing. Often described as deeply relaxing, Reiki treats the whole person body, emotions, mind and spirit creating benefits including relaxation, feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.
Reiki" (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and comfortably lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.
Reiki is taught by Reiki Master/Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person, from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and emotional perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.
A typical treatment session

Following consultation and consent, you will be asked to sit in a chair or lay down on a couch, usually closing your eyes and just relaxing.

Typically you will spend betyween 30 and 60 minutes of your first consultation session providing a very detailed history including medical and medication history-which may not appear to be related to the problem with which you are presenting. You will discuss a treatment plan, suggesting how many sessions you may require and sign a consent (which you can withdraw at any time). It is unlikely you will have your first treatment at this point.

Each session typically lasts about an hour and you will relax in a reclining chair (or in the case of Reiki treatments on a therapy couch). There are many techniques the therapist may use but usually you will simply be asked to relax with your eyes comfortably closed. You are always fully in control and can ask for the session to stop at any time.

Hypnotherapy & EMDR

Whilst you relax in a chair, the practitioner will speak to you using a variety of voice tones, speeds, emphasis and what may seem to you a strange combination of stories, suggestions and language, typically for around an hour. EMDR, may combine with hypnotic techniques but will be characterised by the therapist asking you to follow finger movements whilst being spoken to. Most hypnotherapy & EMDR requires 3-6 sessions but this depends on your needs and progress.

Reiki

The practitioner may examine your energy field then move around you quietly, sometimes placing one or both hands on you (with yoiur consent) whilst channeling the Reiki energy. Treatments typically last around an hour. Most Reiki therapy requires 4-6 treatments but this depends on your needs and progress..
You may or may not remain fully aware of everything that happens during the hypnotherapy or Reiki session but you will likely re-orientate feeling very comfortable and relaxed.
NB: if you are epileptic or being treated for clinical depression, or if you have mobility or access needs you should declare this when making the initial appoitment as this is important for the therapist to know.
Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied at each session by the parent or legal guardian who will provide consent (this practise does not normally see clients under the age of 16).
You are welcome to, and are encouraged to, bring a chaperone or friend with you to any session who will be made comfortable in another room.
